” … and seek means of nearness to him, and strive hard in his way that you may be successful.” 5:35

If there was a person whom you wanted to impress, the first thing you would do is find out what he or she likes. What is there life like? What do you have in common? What do they enjoy, and find pleasure in.

You have to do the same thing with Allah. And he tells us this will bring us great success.

If you love something or someone, you enjoy being with them, spending time with them, enjoying there company.

You draw near to them, and by doing so you love them more, and they love you  more.

This is no different with Allah ( swt).

I am as My servant thinks I am. I am with him when he makes mention of Me.
If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and
if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an
assembly better than it. And if he draws near to Me an arm’s length, I draw
near to him a fathom’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.
