Declaration for Widow’s Pension Documents. This folder includes photocopies of documents collected by Winifred Norman, Lewis Latimer’s granddaughter, relating to Lewis Latimer’s brother George A. Latimer and his family. They are valuable for providing biographical details about the Latimer family. Like his brother Lewis, George served in the Civil War, enlisting in the 29th Connecticut Volunteers, a “Colored” regiment. After the war he and his other brother, William Latimer, served as “Buffalo Soldiers” in an all-Black unit (or multiple units) at Fort McKavett, Texas. George later lived in Hartford, Connecticut.
A filled-out widow’s pension application form, dated early 20th century, related to a military service pension claim by Jane Latimer, the widow of Lewis Latimer’s brother, George A. Latimer. The document provides legal affirmations by the widow regarding her late husband's service, marital history, and eligibility for benefits. Other items include photocopies of Winifred Norman’s queries about Geoge A. Latimer’s war record, and related documents.
