This type of measuring tool was commonly used in engineering, drafting, and woodworking, especially in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It allowed users to measure and replicate angles accurately in construction, carpentry, and technical drawings. It was probably used by Lewis Latimer, given his expertise in engineering and patent drafting.
