Lewis and Mary Latimer rented this apartment on Manhattan’s East 55th Street during the 1890s, before they moved to Brooklyn and then Flushing. Lewis noted on the back of this view of the front parlor that it was “used as Study of L.H. Latimer.” Issues of the New York Age, the city’s Black newspaper to which Latimer sometimes contributed, hang on the wall at upper right. The image also features a large desk with various items on its surface and a chair. The light from a nearby window illuminates the workspace, casting shadows that add depth to the room's details.
