Edison Pioneers Meeting, ca. 1920.
Photograph
A photograph of a formal meeting of the Edison Pioneers, the group founded in 1918 as an organization of early employees of Thomas Edison. Lewis Latimer was a charter member. Printed on the lower margin of the photograph is a newspaper clipping headline reading, “EDISON PIONEERS ENLARGE SCOPE OF ORGANIZATION. Annual Constitution to Provide for Taking in Employes Working for Edison Between Period of 1886 and 1900” with a handwritten note giving the publication as “Electrical Review March 6, 1920.” Also handwritten on the lower margin is a brief synopsis of the Edison Pioneers’ inception, and a numbered list as a “key” to identifying the 28 men shown in the photograph. In addition to Lewis Latimer (no. 28, misidentified as “E. H. Latimer”), this key identifies other Edison veterans who Latimer knew, including F. A. Wardlaw, William Joseph Hammer (who had displayed one of Latimer’s lamp designs in a historic exhibition in St. Louis in 1904), and Latimer’s employer at the time this picture was taken, Edwin Wesley Hammer.
This photograph is valuable in that it informally identifies the members of the Edison Pioneers, including Latimer, who gathered for this photograph, probably in 1920
