Portrait of Lewis H. Latimer – 70 Years Young, July 1919

Lewis H. Latimer (1848–1928) was an African American inventor, engineer, and draftsman, best known for his contributions to electric lighting technology and the telephone. At the time of this photograph, Latimer was retired but still highly respected in the scientific community, particularly for his work with Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and Hiram Maxim. The note to his wife, Mary, reflects his love and devotion. Mary Wilson Latimer was an integral part of his life, and the couple shared a strong bond, which is evident in this thoughtfully inscribed portrait. This photograph provides a rare and personal glimpse into the life of a pioneering Black scientist during the early 20th century.
