Lewis Latimer’s Distinguished Uniform

A historic uniform belonging to Lewis Latimer, probably acquired during his membership in the Grand Army of the Republic’s George Huntsman Post No. 50 in Flushing, Queens. Winifred Norman, Latimer’s granddaughter, recorded a family recollection about him: “GAR—He was very proud of his role here—He wore his uniform to meetings, where he was the Adjutant.” The uniform is adorned with decorative braiding and medals signifying his honorary affiliations. The collar features the number "50," and the chest displays medals commemorating the Spanish War Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
