Patent Drawing of Light Bulb Filament Design by Lewis H. Latimer (1881)

During the late 19th century, the race to develop practical electric lighting was at its peak, with inventors such as Thomas Edison and Hiram Maxim leading the charge. Latimer, an expert draftsman and engineer, played a crucial role in advancing carbon filament technology, which extended the lifespan of electric bulbs compared to earlier paper-based filaments. Latimer worked closely with Edison at the Edison Electric Light Company, where he patented methods for producing more durable carbon filaments in 1881 and 1882. His contributions paved the way for affordable electric lighting in homes, businesses, and cities around the world. This drawing serves as an original patent sketch that would have been used in formal documentation to secure legal protection for his innovations.
