What people ask before we work together
How much does an African American genealogist cost?
My work starts with a $50 Discovery Call, which is 60 minutes. After that, a single Consultation Call is $100, a 5-Call Retainer is $500, and a done-for-you Research Report documenting your enslaved ancestors is $575. Family archive digitization is $300 per roughly 3,000 items, or $700 with cataloging and an online exhibit. See every service and price.
Can you find enslaved ancestors before 1870?
Often, yes. Before 1870 most of our ancestors were not recorded by name in the census, so the research has to go beyond the obvious records. I use archival records, oral histories, DNA analysis and historical context to get past that wall. Not every line can be proven, and I won't pretend otherwise. On the Discovery Call I tell you plainly what's possible for your family.
Where do I start if I'm new to genealogy?
Start with the book or a live class if you want to learn the method yourself. If you'd rather talk through your own family first, book a Discovery Call.
Do I need a DNA test to work with you?
Not for a consultation. The Research Report does require an AncestryDNA test. I don't sell or run DNA tests. I help you understand the results you already have and use them alongside the records.
Do you work with museums, archives and universities?
Yes. Institutional work in digitization and archival preservation runs through my consulting firm, Legacy Planning & Preservation. This site is for individuals and families.
