18 Feb Bridging Heritage & Innovation: My Contribution to an Upcoming Book on Browser-Based VR for GLAM Institutions
I’m excited to share that my research on browser-based virtual reality (VR) for cultural preservation will be featured in an upcoming academic publication! My chapter, “Leveraging Browser-Based VR for GLAM Institutions: Broadening Access to African and Diaspora Cultural Heritage,” will be published in Trends and Innovations Concerning Library & Information Science: A Multidisciplinary Approach by IGI Global, expected in early 2025.
This chapter explores how browser-based VR technology is revolutionizing access, engagement, and preservation in Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums (GLAMs). It focuses on practical, accessible solutions for institutions looking to integrate immersive technology into their storytelling, education, and public engagement strategies—without the high costs and barriers of traditional VR.
How This Research Connects to My Work
This chapter builds on my years of experience in virtual heritage preservation, digital archiving, and immersive technology. My nonprofit, Legacy Builders & Empowerment Inc., has been at the forefront of integrating VR and AR into GLAM institutions to increase access and engagement with cultural collections.
Some of my key projects include:
🔹 Legacy Designs Studio (Second Life) – A virtual space where we showcase immersive storytelling and digital exhibits.
🔹 Legacy Library (Spatial.io) – A browser-based 3D library designed to enhance public access to cultural archives and research materials.
🔹 VR & AR Development for Museums & Archives – Helping institutions create interactive, digital experiences for their communities.
Through these initiatives, I’ve worked with libraries, museums, and historical institutions to integrate cutting-edge technology into their preservation and education strategies.
This research is an extension of that mission—helping institutions move beyond traditional methods and embrace the future of digital storytelling.
Why Browser-Based VR is a Game-Changer for GLAMs
Traditional virtual reality often requires expensive headsets and high-powered computers, making it inaccessible to many institutions and the communities they serve. Browser-based VR removes these barriers by allowing users to experience immersive digital exhibits directly through their web browser—whether on a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
This approach is particularly powerful for:
✅ Expanding global access to cultural archives and museum exhibits
✅ Preserving African and Diaspora heritage in digital spaces
✅ Bridging the digital divide by offering accessible, interactive storytelling
✅ Enhancing educational programs through immersive learning experiences
Through my work at Legacy Builders & Empowerment Inc., I’ve seen firsthand how virtual spaces can transform the way communities engage with history, heritage, and cultural narratives.
What This Means for Institutions & Professionals in GLAM Fields
For GLAM professionals, archivists, and cultural institutions, this chapter provides a blueprint for adopting browser-based VR. It covers:
📌 How to implement virtual exhibits and interactive experiences without large budgets
📌 Real-world case studies showcasing the impact of browser-based VR
📌 Best practices for integrating immersive technology into digital preservation strategies
I believe that VR and digital storytelling are essential tools for preserving culture, history, and identity—especially for underrepresented communities. This chapter highlights practical ways institutions can leverage VR to expand access, engagement, and education.
What’s Next?
📖 Trends and Innovations Concerning Library & Information Science will be published by IGI Global in early 2025—I’ll share updates when the book is officially released!
In the meantime, I’m continuing to:
🔹 Research and develop VR spaces for heritage preservation
🔹 Work with institutions to integrate immersive technology into their programs
🔹 Consult with organizations on VR/AR solutions for cultural storytelling
If you’re a museum, library, or archival institution interested in bringing VR into your work, let’s connect!
